LPD 6K screens: The next LED technology for large displays?

The screen display market constantly undergoes the implementation and normalization of new technologies.

CRT TVs gave away to plasma and LCD screens. Plasma stepped down and LCDs evolved to become LED-based and OLED-based. Now, a new technology could be looking to unseat LED as the definitive screen display technology for large-sized displays.

An innovation in the science of screen technology

Laser Phosphorous Display technology, or LPD, is an innovation by US-based firm Prysm. The technology, which has been around since 2010, seeks to deliver the ultimate viewing experience.

At the moment, the technology is focused on large-format displays, such as Prysm’s recently announced LPD 6K series, which comes in 135-inch and 190-inch screens. It is worthy of note that these screens are single-panel – there are no tiles involved or bezels to distort viewing – which makes them ever the more impressive.

Speaking to AMEinfo, Tanvir Osama, Prysm’s vice president EMEA, said: “The big thing about LPD technology is that it offers a large-sized single panel screen with uncompromised image quality, is bezel-free, has and is also maintenance-free. There are no consumables or replacement parts required.

A 135-inch screen goes for about $179,000.

A market gap needed filling

Prysm has focused primarily on the large screen market. “Prysm is all about large screens,” Osama reiterated.

“When it comes to large screens, there are not many options available,” he explained. “The size of the screen is really dependent on what the customer’s application [need] is going to be. Typically, if you are looking for a screen which is 100 inches diagonal or below… you have single panel options available from technologies like LCD and OLED. There are good commercially viable options available for screens up to 100 inch and they perform very well. We even sell some of those.”

“The challenge really is for the mid-size venues where you want a 100 to a 250-inch screen. In that space, what happens is that the available options come with compromises. If you want to go with LCD, you are forced to make a larger screen combined of multiple LCDs where you have a bezel gap in between.”

He highlights the disadvantages of using LED for such a large screen when the viewing distance is small, one being the excessive brightness, which makes extended viewing troublesome. Secondly, because of the distinct pixels on an LED screen, it is sometimes difficult to make out specific characters, such as text.

This is where the LPD 6K display comes in – the market gap they seek to fill. They want to provide customers with large displays that offer uncompromised viewing, while enhancing interactivity and applicability through these screens’ touch capabilities.

A B2B approach

Currently, Prysm is marketing LPD technology towards businesses more than consumers.

“A good example of where it can be used is in what we call the customer experience center,” Osama notes. “The high-end executive boardrooms where a lot of data is being analyzed, meetings are being conducted – that is another good example of where this technology is highly applicable.”

He also notes that these screens serve the visualization needs of business, such as mining companies and oil and gas extraction firms. The interactive, high-fidelity screens offer engineers the ability to manipulate the 3D model of an operation in a collaborative setting. LPD 6K screens also have high-end retail applications, among others.

Plans for the GCC

Prysm’s commercial launch as a company was in 2010. Commercial installations only started in 2011. Surprisingly, Osama revealed that the Middle East has always been a priority for Prysm – since day one – and it continues to be one.

“When we launched in 2010 commercially, we launched in the US, Europe, and the Middle East – all at the same time,” he revealed.

“The GCC was actually one of the first places that we installed our LPD technology. Our 2nd or 3rd installation in the world was in Dubai – we were installing in Dubai TV back then, in 2011.”

They launched in Africa last year.

Prysm will facilitate its presence in the region through distributor FVC.

“We see [FVC] as an extension of Prysm. They are fully trained, fully certified and have full access to all of our technical resources, and they have a presence locally in different areas, so they are able to help customers adopt this technology much faster.”

“Resellers and system integrators can sell this product or present it to their customers with full peace of mind that once they secure the project, FVC will step in and do the full installation for them and help them maintain it for the next 6-7 years.”

As the market becomes more accustomed to LPD 6K technology, and as it becomes more affordable over the coming few years, we could see larger-format LPD displays take the consumer large-screen TV market by storm.
